Shape modeling technique KOALA validated by ESA Rosetta at (21) Lutetia

چکیده
We present here a comparison of our results from ground-based observations of asteroid (21) Lutetia with imaging data acquired during the flyby of the asteroid by the ESA Rosetta mission. This flyby provided a unique opportunity to evaluate and calibrate our method of determination of size, 3-D shape, and spin of an asteroid from ground-based observations. Knowledge of certain observable physical properties of small bodies (e.g., size, spin, 3-D shape, and density) have far-reaching implications in furthering our understanding of these objects, such as composition, internal structure, and the effects of non-gravitational forces. We review the different observing techniques used to determine the above physical properties of asteroids and present our 3-D shape-modeling technique KOALA – Knitted Occultation, Adaptive-optics, and Lightcurve Analysis – which is based on multi-dataset inversion. We compare the results we obtained with KOALA, prior to the flyby, on asteroid (21) Lutetia with the high-spatial resolution images of the asteroid taken with the OSIRIS camera on-board the ESA Rosetta spacecraft, during its encounter with Lutetia on 2010 July 10. The spin axis determined with KOALA was found to be accurate to within 21, while the KOALA diameter determinations were within 2% of the Rosetta-derived values. The 3-D shape of the KOALA model is also confirmed by the spectacular visual agreement between both 3-D shape models (KOALA preand OSIRIS post-flyby). We found a typical deviation of only 2 km at local scales between the profiles from KOALA predictions and OSIRIS images, resulting in a volume uncertainty provided by KOALA better than 10%. Radiometric techniques for the interpretation of thermal infrared data also benefit greatly from the KOALA shape model: the absolute size and geometric albedo can be derived with high accuracy, and thermal properties, for example the thermal inertia, can be determined unambiguously. The corresponding Lutetia analysis leads to a geometric albedo of 0.1970.01 and a thermal inertia below 40 J m 2 s 0.5 K , both in excellent agreement with the Rosetta findings. We consider this to be a validation of the KOALA method. Because space exploration will remain limited to only a few objects, KOALA stands as a powerful technique to study a much larger set of small bodies using Earth-based

Images of asteroid 21 Lutetia: a remnant planetesimal from the early Solar System.
Images obtained by the Optical, Spectroscopic, and Infrared Remote Imaging System (OSIRIS) cameras onboard the Rosetta spacecraft reveal that asteroid 21 Lutetia has a complex geology and one of the highest asteroid densities measured so far, 3.4 ± 0.3 grams per cubic centimeter. The north pole region is covered by a thick layer of regolith, which is seen to flow in major landslides associated ...
متن کاملThe Rosetta mission orbiter science overview: the comet phase
The international Rosetta mission was launched in 2004 and consists of the orbiter spacecraft Rosetta and the lander Philae. The aim of the mission is to map the comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko by remote sensing, and to examine its environment in situ and its evolution in the inner Solar System. Rosetta was the first spacecraft to rendezvous with and orbit a comet, accompanying it as it passes ...
متن کاملA Method for Asteroids 3D Surface Reconstruction from Close Approach Distances
We present a procedure for asteroids 3D surface reconstruction from images for close approach distances. Different from other 3D reconstruction scenario from spacecraft images, the closer flyby gave the chance to revolve around the asteroid shape and thus acquiring images from different viewpoints with a higher baseline. The chance to have more information of the asteroids surface is however pa...
متن کاملDevelopment and field validation of a regional, management‐scale habitat model: A koala Phascolarctos cinereus case study
Species distribution models have great potential to efficiently guide management for threatened species, especially for those that are rare or cryptic. We used MaxEnt to develop a regional-scale model for the koala Phascolarctos cinereus at a resolution (250 m) that could be used to guide management. To ensure the model was fit for purpose, we placed emphasis on validating the model using indep...
متن کاملFirst Measurements of the Surface Composition of 67p Using the Ptolemy Mass
Introduction: Launched in 2004, and having awoken from deep space hibernation early in 2014, the Rosetta spacecraft [1] arrived at the comet designated 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko [2] on 6 August 2014. The spacecraft is currently in orbit around the comet and will hopefully continue to provide high quality science data for several more months to come. On 12 November 2014 the Philae lander element...
